General Information

The James Madison University Foundation invites applications for its Chief Executive Officer position that will become open July 1, 2018 due to the retirement of its current CEO. The Foundation’s MISSION is to support and serve the James Madison University community. As we carry out that obligation, our VISION, is to provide an ever-growing and sustainable source of private support for the university community by promoting a culture of philanthropy, prudent investment, stewardship and excellence. As we seek to fulfill our ambitions, we are guided by an abiding commitment to the university, VALUING generosity and fiscal responsibility.

The Foundation was established in 1969. We currently hold assets of $150 million dollars and have a full-time staff of seven reporting to the CEO. The organization has an active Board of Trustees with twenty-five members that convenes three times a year. While Board members are donors and assist in the cultivation of gifts, the responsibility for fundraising rests with the University and its development staff.

The successful candidate must complete a Statement of Personal Economic Interests prior to their first day of employment.

Duties and Responsibilities

The CEO is responsible for the general, day-to-day management of the affairs of the Foundation and is authorized to accept gifts, collect revenues, and make expenditures as necessary to promote the effective operation of the organization.


The Search Committee is seeking a leader with proven experience in organizational administration and supervision with a knowledge of investment practices, finance and banking, real estate, tax accounting and related legal issues in a higher education environment. We desire a forward-looking individual who is honest and competent and who is also an effective communicator.
