General Information

The Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services (IIHHS) engages students in career preparation by promoting scholarship, providing interprofessional learning experiences, and connecting our campus with communities through innovative programs that advance the quality of life. The Institute houses several outreach programs that support the health, education, and well-being of children, youth, and families in Harrisonburg City, Rockingham County, Page County, and beyond.

This position oversees the planning, organizing, and directing of operations of youth programs at IIHHS include the Reading Road Show-Gus Bus, Teen Pregnancy Prevention, Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program, and the Future Forward program. Programs and projects are primarily funded through local, state, federal and foundation grants.

Duties and Responsibilities

Chief Objective: Oversees the planning, organizing and directing of operations of IIHHS youth programs.

Key Responsibilities:
• Support JMU’s and IIHHS’ mission and vision to provide outreach programs to the community and provide quality experiential learning and opportunities to JMU students.
• Oversee management of IIHHS youth program funding sources and responsible for ensuring grant compliance.
• Manage program/project budgets, staffing, student volunteers, and progress toward program goals and objectives.
• Govern the initiatives of IIHHS youth programs and special projects.
• Conduct grant research and grant development for IIHHS youth programs and special projects.
• Manage special projects and programs for the Institute for Innovation in health and Human Services.
• Oversee public relations for IIHHS youth programs.
• Work in collaboration with other agencies in our locality, region, and state around the issue of youth development to utilize all available resources, avoid duplication of services, and ensure that JMU is
• Take a leadership role in strengthening region-wide community relationships.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a leadership role.

• Grant writing and fund development experience.

• Grant management experience.

• Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures related to grant compliance.

• Experience leading collaborative projects.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with young adults, agency professionals, office staff, and community members.

• Experience with youth development activities.

• Experience with public relations strategies.

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Excellent communication skills.

• Excellent organizational skills.

• Excel at taking initiative in an independent work environment.

• Possession of leadership qualities.

• Ability to simultaneously plan for the long-term and meet short-term goals.
