Position Summary Information

General Information

The University Health Center (UHC) at James Madison University (JMU) invites applications for a General Medicine Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. The successful candidate will provide health care to JMU students by assessing and managing their acute health care problems in collaboration with the entire UHC staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Assessment and treatment of the student’s medical complaint. Meets with patients in a timely manner. Explains symptoms to patients incorporating appropriate education regarding prevention and treatment. Follows guidelines for appropriate pharmacological agents, conferring with staff physician as necessary.
- Serves as resource to all staff regarding medical assessment and treatment with professionalism and empathy.
- Documents records in the student’s medical file. Documents appropriately according to guidelines, in a legible manner and timely-documentation completed on a daily basis.
- Participates in University Health Center committees as required or requested.


- Master’s degree as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant from an accredited institution.
- Passed the national certifying exam for the applicable program of study.
- Unrestricted license from the Virginia Board of Medicine to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
- License through the US Drug Enforcement Agency to prescribe medications consistent with the license as an NP or PA to practice medicine.
- Prefer experience treating outpatients who have anxiety and/or depression.
