General Information

James Madison University (JMU) Libraries and Educational Technologies (LET) invites applications for the Director of Assessment and Planning. Working with LET and university colleagues, this position will provide a leadership role in building a collaborative, data-informed infrastructure that supports, informs, and promotes the continuous improvement of LET’s strategic initiatives, programs, collections, services, and curriculum. This position coordinates LET’s strategic planning and reporting process and will serve as a consultant for LET departments, faculty, and staff in developing and implementing the technical and administrative aspects of research projects and activities. This position serves as an expert in the knowledge of sources for, trends in, and the use of library, educational technology, and higher education institutional data.

LET is established as a campus leader in information literacy instruction, research support, curricular and special collections and educational technology integration. This position joins an organization that is dedicated to building on these strengths while supporting a collaborative and innovative culture.

Salary is commensurate with experience. Tenure-track faculty positions have excellent benefits including 24 days of vacation and a choice of retirement plans. Duties and Responsibilities

-Build a collaborative, data-informed infrastructure that supports, informs, and promotes the continuous improvement of LET’s strategic initiatives, programs, collections, services, and curriculum.
-Coordinate LET strategic planning in collaboration with LET units and departments and in alignment with university’s established practices and standards. Informs the development of evidence-based actionable outcomes.
-Conduct research and facilitate the use of quantitative and qualitative data for decision support, policy review, planning, and evaluation of organizational performance in support of the university’s and LET’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.
-Coordinate cyclical reporting mandates for external and internal constituents, including IPEDS, ACRL, Institutional Research, JMU Strategic Planning and Engagement, etc.
-Compile reports detailing relevant and useful findings from the gathered data, and provide analysis (including longitudinal studies) and other context as appropriate. Effectively communicate findings within LET, particularly with LET Administration and Leadership.
-Supervise staff in the Assessment and Planning department.
-Serve as a consultant for LET departments, faculty, and staff in developing and implementing the technical and administrative aspects of research projects and activities, including but not limited to methodology development and statistical analysis.
-Actively engage with LET departments, faculty, and staff to make evaluation understandable and intrinsic to the organization.
-Engage in activities for scholarly achievement and professional development.
-Serve on LET, university, state and/or national committees to contribute expertise to assessment, research, and evaluation.


Required Qualifications:
-Master’s degree in the Social Sciences or in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA accredited institution or international equivalent with coursework in and application of statistical methods, qualitative methods, and research design.
-Demonstrated commitment to support and contribute to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment.
-Evidence of outstanding interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills, including relationship building and the ability to convey nuanced and complex information to diverse audiences.
-Demonstrated understanding of quantitative and qualitative assessment methodologies and their application in higher education.
-Experience conducting data analysis and creating customized reports using statistical software applications (such as Excel, SPSS).
-Demonstrated ability to execute the duties with a high level of accountability, independence, confidentiality, discretion, and act with the highest level of professional ethics.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience working with assessment tools in higher education.
-Experience assessing undergraduate student learning of information and digital literacy skills.
-Experience with data visualization.
-Experience managing a strategic planning process.
