General Information

James Madison University (JMU) is accepting applications for a Social Media Manager to take the university’s social media presence to the next level and increase engagement with the university’s many audiences. A recent study by marketing firm, Up & Up found that JMU has the third most engaging social media presence out of the 338 NCAA Division 1 institutions studied for the 2016-17 academic year.

Duties and Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities of the Social Media Manager include:
- Develop and implement a strategic social media plan for increasing engagement among the university’s key audiences.
- Conceptualize and execute campaigns that employ the latest social media techniques and trends to support the university’s key goals related to advancement, recruitment and institutional branding.
- Prepare quarterly and annual reports that analyze and assess in both qualitative and quantitative measurements the impact of social media.
- Populate JMU’s main university-level social media pages (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) with a steady flow of engaging, interactive content with a focus on video and photo assets. Maintain detailed posting calendar.
- Supervise the Digital Content Coordinator, who is responsible for the creation of video and other visual assets for social media.
- Build and maintain relationships with social media administrators and others around campus, serving as an expert resource on matters relating to social media.
- Serve as a member of the university’s crisis communications team by identifying emerging issues on social media that could be potentially damaging to the brand.
- Manage the university’s social media monitoring, reporting and publishing software systems.
- Develop and maintain a social media influencer program.
- Engage in a two-way dialog with JMU’s social media followers, providing a high level of customer service by responding to questions and comments in a timely manner.
- Maintain the “JMU Social Media Directory” website, the “Social Media” section of the Identity Guide, and the Facebook group for social media administrators.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess strong public relations, writing and interactive web skills and must be able to work independently to develop strategy and to cultivate content that supports the engagement priorities of the university. Experience building social media networks for brands with the intent to strategically engage key audiences is required, along with experience with reporting on engagement metrics. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in interactive media, public relations, marketing or related field or a combination of college and related experience is required. Video production, graphic design and photography skills are preferred.
