James Madison University’s (JMU) Hart School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management is proud to announce that it is inviting applications for a tenure track HOSPITALITY faculty position at the Assistant level beginning in August 2018.

The hospitality leaders of tomorrow must be educated and enlightened citizens who will lead productive and meaningful lives. The program mission is to develop ethical hospitality leaders through sound theoretical course work, innovative learning activities, mentoring opportunities, exposure to premier hospitality organizations and interaction with dynamic industry professionals. Our well-regarded faculty engages in a wide variety of professional development and scholarly activities to assure that the JMU hospitality student receives an exceptional educational experience. We take great pride in a tradition of vibrant instruction within an innovative curriculum. The School is affiliated with the College of Business and has fifteen full time faculty and numerous adjuncts serving 500 majors in Hospitality Management and 400 majors in Sport and Recreation Management. The Hospitality Program was established in 1974. In 2016, after a more than 3 million dollar endowment from G.J. and Heather Hart the school became the Hart School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management, this first named school in JMU history.

Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibility for this tenure track position involves a blend of teaching, scholarship and service. The 3-3 teaching load may include courses in Lodging, Senior Seminar, Foundations Course, Cost Control, and Human Resources, as well as other functional areas within the hospitality industry. Additional teaching areas and specific assignments are dependent upon School needs.

Qualifications

Earned doctorate (ABD may apply) with at least one degree in hospitality management or a closely related discipline. In addition to the academic preparation, the quality of the institution of higher learning is critical. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated record of outstanding classroom teaching; an ability to connect with undergraduate students; a willingness to work collaboratively with discipline-specific organizations in the region and a desire to actively participate in students’ experiential learning opportunities. Regarding scholarship, the successful candidate will have a clear research stream and the ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals. Lastly, professional work experience at the managerial level within the hospitality industry is preferable over a summer internship or being a graduate assistant.

Philosophically, the ideal candidate must demonstrate that he or she can function as a contributing team member within the School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management Program and also an excited colleague to assist the entire School in developing a unique teaching and learning culture emphasizing creativity, flexibility and innovation.
