General Information

The Department of Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT) at James Madison University (JMU) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning August, 2018. The Department of Integrated Science and Technology (soon to become the School of Integrated Sciences) is a dynamic, highly interdisciplinary academic unit of 50 faculty with terminal degrees in 39 different fields. Our graduates are innovative problem solvers with strong analytical and teaming skills that enable them to work on complex socio-technical problems facing organizations, communities, and society. Duties and Responsibilities

The Department seeks a broadly trained Applied Data Scientist whose specializations complement one or more of the undergraduate programs housed within the department: Integrated Science and Technology, Geographic Science, and Intelligence Analysis. Potential areas of focus might include but are not limited to Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Big Data Engineering, Spatial Analysis/GIS, Data Mining, Data Visualization, Computational Sciences, and Applied Statistics. Example application areas of interest to the department include: information and knowledge management, national security/business intelligence, environmental modeling, telecommunications, geography, health informatics, energy, manufacturing, and demography. A strong understanding of issues related to data ethics is desired.

The successful candidate will teach courses in one or more programs, maintain an active portfolio of scholarship that involves undergraduate students, and participate in service activities that contribute to the vitality of the university and profession. The successful candidate must embrace the interdisciplinary nature of the department by actively seeking opportunities to collaborate across program boundaries, and by leading the department into innovative applications of data science with fellow faculty. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching.


An earned Ph.D. or comparable terminal degree at the time of appointment is strongly preferred, but candidates with extensive industry or government experience and a master’s degree will be considered. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the department’s diversity. We value candidates who can demonstrate a history of working effectively with diverse groups of students, colleagues, and community members.
