Position Summary Information

General Information

The Graduate Assistant for Marketing and Social Media will effectively promote University Recreation programs, facilities and services.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Supervision and leadership responsibilities for the marketing student staff. Responsible for planning and implementing marketing staff meetings (scheduling, creating/sharing agendas, incorporating in-service training & teambuilding). Creates contact lists and approves work schedules/changes. Sends weekly staff update emails. Schedules and participates in interviews and evaluations.
2. Provides project management oversight to select marketing student projects for the Fall and Spring academic semesters. This includes assigning projects, setting deadlines, providing feedback/proofing, ensuring timely publication/implementation, and ensuring communication with stakeholders.
3. Serves as an administrator for UREC Social Media. Schedules messages on UREC social media communications (includes Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat), monitors activity, and engages with our audience.
4. Creates video and photo content. Oversees the production of the UREC End of the Year Video.
5. Facility supervision and operational responsibilities for the 278,515 sq/ft University Recreation Center and satellite facilities is required.
6. Attendance and active involvement at GA Training week (August), New Hire and Common (August/Fall/Spring) Training sessions, Marketing staff training and in-service trainings, UREC Staff Retreats (August/January), SAUP Divisional Fall meetings are mandatory. Attendance and active involvement at Marketing staff meetings, UREC Full staff meetings, and GA SERC Committee meetings is required.
7. Average hours per week (including finals week): 20 hours per week


-Bachelors Degree required.
-Acceptance into graduate program.
-First Responder (CPR, First Aid, AED, BBP certifications)
(James Madison University offers a Masters Degree concentration in Campus Recreation.)

Conditions of Employment

Students may apply to a graduate assistantship prior to being accepted into a graduate program. However, to be eligible to receive an assistantship upon entry into a graduate program, the following criteria must be met:

  • The student must be conditionally or unconditionally accepted into a graduate program. Students who are provisionally accepted will not be eligible until they achieve conditional or unconditional acceptance into their program.

  • The students must have an official transcript on file indicating completion of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution.

  • After receiving an assistantship, the student must maintain at least a 3.0 graduate GPA in order to retain or reapply for the assistantship.

These are minimum criteria. Graduate program coordinators have the right to impose additional criteria if they see fit.
