Position Summary Information

General Information

The Cohen Center is located in Madison Hall on JMU’s Bluestone campus. The Center provides programming to the JMU community, specifically professionalization workshops and roundtables for graduate students, as well as talks by guest speakers on wide-ranging topics for the JMU community. The Center Director is looking for two graduate assistants to work with the Director to publicize and support the programming of the Center during the spring 2018 semester. Each assistant will receive 9 credit hours of in-state tuition support and pay for the hours worked.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful applicants will assist the Center Director with administrative responsibilities (scheduling events, confirming room reservations, etc.) as well as promoting the activities of the center through the use of social media and the center’s website. They will also coordinate livestreaming selected events and developing a series of audio podcasts in consultation with the Center Director. The successful candidates are expected to work 20 hours per week during the academic year.


• Must be graduate students at James Madison University and be able to work 20 hours a week;
• Must have outstanding interpersonal skills with good written and verbal communication skills;
• Must be detailed oriented and able to meet deadlines;
• Must be familiar with design software including Adobe Photoshop and InDesign;
• Must be familiar with video production and/or livestreaming of events;
• Must be familiar with audio podcasting production;
• Must be familiar with social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter.

Conditions of Employment

Students may apply to a graduate assistantship prior to being accepted into a graduate program. However, to be eligible to receive an assistantship upon entry into a graduate program, the following criteria must be met:

  • The student must be conditionally or unconditionally accepted into a graduate program. Students who are provisionally accepted will not be eligible until they achieve conditional or unconditional acceptance into their program.

  • The students must have an official transcript on file indicating completion of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution.

  • After receiving an assistantship, the student must maintain at least a 3.0 graduate GPA in order to retain or reapply for the assistantship.

These are minimum criteria. Graduate program coordinators have the right to impose additional criteria if they see fit.
