Position Summary Information

General Information

The Graduate Assistant for Aquatics and Safety will provide leadership and guidance for the Aquatics (LGIs, WSIs, and lifeguards) and Safety (EMT-B) Staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Facility supervision and operational responsibilities for the 278,515 sq/ft University Recreation Canter and satellite facilities is required. Oversees general operation of UREC facility including student staff and participant service.
2. Coordinate the Learn to Swim program and Supervise the instructor staff.
3. Assist the Coordinator of Aquatics and Safety in selected aspects of managing the Aquatics and Safety Program such as but not limited to developing policies and procedures for the Aquatics and Safety area.
4. Schedule the instructors for semesterly CPR, 1st Aid, Lifeguard Training, and BBP Classes until able to teach classes. Maintain database for UREC employee certifications.
5. Assist in the written and face to face evaluation of all Aquatics and Safety staff.
6. Coordinate all passive education efforts.
7. Experience teaching and working with Learn To Swim Program, supervision preferred.
8. General knowledge of Aquatics programming and facility supervision.


-Bachelors Degree required.
-Acceptance into graduate program.
-First Responder (CPR, First Aid, AED, BBP certifications)
(James Madison University offers a Masters Degree concentration in Campus Recreation.)

Conditions of Employment

Students may apply to a graduate assistantship prior to being accepted into a graduate program. However, to be eligible to receive an assistantship upon entry into a graduate program, the following criteria must be met:

  • The student must be conditionally or unconditionally accepted into a graduate program. Students who are provisionally accepted will not be eligible until they achieve conditional or unconditional acceptance into their program.

  • The students must have an official transcript on file indicating completion of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution.

  • After receiving an assistantship, the student must maintain at least a 3.0 graduate GPA in order to retain or reapply for the assistantship.

These are minimum criteria. Graduate program coordinators have the right to impose additional criteria if they see fit.
