Position Summary Information

General Information

The Graduate Assistant for Fitness & Group Exercise will take on a leadership role in the Fitness, Group Exercise, and Wellness program areas. Responsibilities will include supervision of student employees, staff training and continuing education, management of fitness and group exercise activity spaces, and general program design and administration.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Assume Leadership in each of the Fitness, Group Exercise and Wellness program areas throughout GA experience
2. Hire, train, and evaluate Fitness, Group Exercise, and Wellness Staff
3. Conduct individual fitness assessments, develop fitness programming, and assist with small group training in UREC Wellness Center
4. Teach Group Exercise classes
5. Assist in the instruction for in-house training courses
6. Assist with wellness programming in the UREC demonstration kitchen
7. Assist with risk management, budget, and general program administration
8. Serve as a representative on various JMU/UREC committees and/or special events
9. Facility Supervision operational responsibilities for a 278,515 sq. ft. University Recreation Center and satellite facilities is required.

Qualifications

-Knowledge of human anatomy, muscle physiology, and biomechanics
-Exercise program design experience preferred
-Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, Health Science, or related field preferred
-Nationally recognized Personal Trainer certification and/or Group Exercise certification preferred
-CPR, First Aid, AED and Blood Borne Pathogen certifications required.

Conditions of Employment

Students may apply to a graduate assistantship prior to being accepted into a graduate program. However, to be eligible to receive an assistantship upon entry into a graduate program, the following criteria must be met:


  • The student must be conditionally or unconditionally accepted into a graduate program. Students who are provisionally accepted will not be eligible until they achieve conditional or unconditional acceptance into their program.

  • The students must have an official transcript on file indicating completion of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution.

  • After receiving an assistantship, the student must maintain at least a 3.0 graduate GPA in order to retain or reapply for the assistantship.

These are minimum criteria. Graduate program coordinators have the right to impose additional criteria if they see fit.
