Position Summary Information

General Information

James Madison University’s Office of Outreach and Engagement welcomes applications for the position of Director of the Space Explorers Camp for the summer of 2018. The Space Explorers Camp runs for three weeks in July each year with four separate sessions: 2 week long, half-day camps for elementary age students, 1 week long full-day camp for middle school students and one week-long residential camp for high school age students.

Duties and Responsibilities

The director of the camp will be responsible for reviewing, revising and implementing the scientific program and activities based upon the curricula used in prior years, interacting with the science faculty at JMU particularly those in the John C. Well Planetarium and working with the staff of the Office of Outreach & Engagement on issues related to planning and management of the camp.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in teaching astronomy or physical sciences, a demonstrated interest in educating children and young adults and must be available for each of the day camps and to stay in the dorms overnight during the residential camp. Professional connections that would assist with scheduling field trips or external experts (for example at NASA, the Smithsonian, NRAO, etc.) will strengthen a candidate’s application for this position.

Condition(s) of Employment

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check.

This is a part-time wage position and is not eligible for benefits.
