Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer –
James Madison University, a Division I member of the NCAA and Colonial Athletic Association is seeking four (4) Athletic Training Graduate Assistantships. See the description below for these positions:
The Athletic Training Graduate Assistants will be responsible for the prevention and care of injuries and illnesses to student-athletes participating in 18 varsity sports. Full tuition waiver is available for the 2018-19 academic year to include up to 18 graduate credits. An assistantship stipend in the amount of approximately $11,650 will also be provided. Assistantship dates are, approximately from August 1, 2018 – May 30, 2019 and may be renewed for the 2019-2020 academic year. For more information please visit:

Duties and Responsibilities

Athletic Training Graduate Assistants: Responsibilities include: team coverage, travel obligations, sports medicine department coverage, possible teaching opportunities, and serving as a Preceptor in JMU’s undergraduate accredited athletic training education program. The successful candidates will ensure compliance with all relevant institutional, CAA, NCAA, and State of Virginia regulations. A complete list of responsibilities will be provided to those offered assistantships.


All applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree from a CAATE Accredited Athletic Training Education Program; NATABOC exam eligible (must be BOC certified by June 2018, preference given to individuals with one year of certification with experience supervising students but not required); CPR for the Professional Rescuer & AED Certified; and must be eligible for State of Virginia Athletic Training License (must possess state licensure at start of assistantship in August). Candidates must meet university qualifications for enrollment to graduate school. It is highly recommended that candidates apply for graduate admission at the time you submit your application. No GA position can be offered until the candidates have been accepted into a graduate degree program.

Conditions of Employment

Students may apply to a graduate assistantship prior to being accepted into a graduate program. However, to be eligible to receive an assistantship upon entry into a graduate program, the following criteria must be met:

  • The student must be conditionally or unconditionally accepted into a graduate program. Students who are provisionally accepted will not be eligible until they achieve conditional or unconditional acceptance into their program.

  • The students must have an official transcript on file indicating completion of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution.

  • After receiving an assistantship, the student must maintain at least a 3.0 graduate GPA in order to retain or reapply for the assistantship.

These are minimum criteria. Graduate program coordinators have the right to impose additional criteria if they see fit.
