General Information

The Office of Institutional Research (OIR) at James Madison University is accepting applications for an Associate Director. The Associate Director is a member of the OIR Leadership Team and administratively reports to the Director of Institutional Research.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Offers support, information and guidance in assisting the director for the purpose of developing effective vision, strategy, tactics and procedures for the department.
• Collaborates with other staff members to cross-train on required reports.
• Serves as Director in the absence of the OIR Director.
• Provides leadership – supervision, performance evaluation, guidance and encouragement to those employees under supervision (Research Analyst).
• Manages and develops interactive data displays using data visualization software.
• Maintains an awareness of new and changing national, regional and institutional information requirements.
• Stays current with important national and regional trends that affect higher education and assists OIR and the institution with appropriate responses.
• Develops and maintains a broad understanding of the research and reporting needs of the institution.
• Develops and maintains a comprehensive working knowledge of accrediting agencies and the impact of their unique and changing requirements on the institution.
• Works closely with the director, the OIR team and campus administrators to provide data and analyses to support evaluation, assessment, planning, and management decisions to advance the university’s mission.
• Completes mandated reports and data files accurately and on time. In particular, this position is responsible for completing selected reports for the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).
• Assists with the gathering and reporting of data for accrediting agencies.
• Assists the director with enrollment projections and SCHEV performance measures.
• Collects, analyzes and projects performance data for measures that relate to the Strategic Plan and are sent to SCHEV and the General Assembly.
• Coordinates and supports the development of an economic impact report for the university.
• Periodically conducts formal studies to provide useful information about issues of importance to the university’s senior management.
• Develops an awareness of the student as a learner and participant in the JMU community. This awareness enhances the usefulness of reports and analyses.
• Supports institutional strategic planning and reporting.
• Supports collection and preparation of the annual University Accomplishments report for the President.
• Serves as liaison with Information Technology Services regarding the implementation and/or use of SQL Server and Tableau Server.
• Periodically assists the director with the analysis of planning information in the Planning Database.


• Minimum qualifications include: Master’s degree, in higher education or related field and five or more years of progressively responsible experience in institutional research at a college or university; or any combination of experience and education that provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the work.

• Leadership skills including vision-casting, coaching, cross-training, team-building, and encouragement.
• Ability to work as a team player, appropriately exhibiting flexibility, creative problem solving, a positive attitude, a sense of humor and a commitment to the education and development of college students.
• Excellent oral, written, and other interpersonal communication skills.
• Demonstrated understanding of, and belief in, the mission of a comprehensive university.
• Ability to proactively prepare the office and JMU to respond to important national and regional trends that affect higher education.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office software, especially MS Access and Excel.
• Experience in PeopleSoft Query programming preferred.
• Experience using Tableau program preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to accomplish data exploration and analysis through interviews, surveys, calculating statistics, web research, and database programming.
• Demonstrated knowledge and abilities in SCHEV and IPEDS mandated reporting procedures.
• Knowledge of forecasting principles and techniques used to project student enrollment and graduation rates.
• Demonstrated ability to provide clear and concise written and oral analyses of results to various audiences within and external to the university.

• Ability to effectively communicate technical information to non-technical staff.
• Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with diverse constituencies within and external to the university, including the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), the federal government (like IPEDS), and regional accrediting agencies (like SACSSOC).
• Proven ability to work as a team player, appropriately exhibiting flexibility, creative problem solving, a positive attitude, a sense of humor and a commitment to the education of college students.
