Position Summary Information

General Information

James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, is accepting applications for a Box Office Manager. This position manages all ticketing operations for performances/special events at the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts including the Masterpiece Season offerings and performances for the School of Music and the School of Theatre and Dance. The Center has five performance venues.

Duties and Responsibilities

-Oversees daily ticket sales, configuration of events, ticket reporting, deposits, patron database, box office student staff, group sales and VIP tickets; liaisons with Choice ticketing, JMU’s IT department and other suppliers.
-Manages staff and supply budget for box office in consultation with the Executive Director; serves as primary interface between the general public (ticket purchasers) and the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
-Oversees and prepares all box office deposits; works with the accounting department to ensure adherence to JMU financial guidelines; prepares and balances all departmental ticket income transfers; prepares and manages all Encore artists contract payments; participates in departmental audits.
-Prepares and maintains accurate and comprehensive daily and weekly ticket sales reports; maintains patron database; prepares database lists for mailings and email blasts.
-Hires, trains, schedules and encourages student workers.
-Serves as liaison to the School of Music and School of Theatre and Dance for their ticketing needs; attends meetings to discuss upcoming events and scheduling; liaisons with production offices regarding house counts and seating configurations. Works with Theatre Management Associate on various projects.


-Box office and staff management experience required.
-Experience working with online ticket systems required.
-Strong computer skills and staff training skills.
-Must love working with students and serve as a role model to create a motivating and positive work environment.
-Ability to work a varied schedule that includes nights and weekends.
-Must be able to thrive in a fast paced work environment and under tight deadlines.
-Must be detail oriented.
-Must be able to maintain confidentiality with regard to financial matters.
-Must exhibit professional courtesy to patrons, faculty, staff and students.
-Must be a team player and a solid communicator.
-Some accounting/budgetary experience preferred.
-Some staff management/hiring experience preferred.
