General Information

The Division of Student Affairs at James Madison University invites applications for the position of Associate Director in the Center for Multicultural Student Services (CMSS). The Associate Director reports to the Director of CMSS.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Associate Director will assist the Director with the operations and direction of all programs emanating out of the Center including several state funded initiatives, cultural programming, leadership training and development, along with retention activities for multicultural/ethnic students. The Associate Director is responsible for designing, maintaining and providing student leadership development opportunities for 30 or more student organizations. Additional responsibilities include assisting with supervising personnel, budgets, advising multi-ethnic and diverse student organizations, as well as coordinating and overseeing summer pre-collegiate programming. The Associate Director is responsible for oversight and assisting with designing assessment and evaluating programs related to multicultural/ethnic services.


The Associate Director is an integral part of a high energy team focused on strengthening multicultural student awareness, engagement and services. The successful candidate should have a proven ability to work across organizational boundaries as an effective advocate and representative of the department’s and university mission, vision and values. The successful candidate should also demonstrate the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of campus and community constituents. Flexible work hours, some evenings and travel are required.

A master’s degree in College Student Personnel Administration or relevant field is required. Three – five years’ experience working in a collegiate setting with multicultural students or knowledge of issues relating to historically underrepresented communities is also required. Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and organizational skills, along with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people are essential. Experience with workshop facilitation, student development and professional staff supervision is required.
