Position Summary Information

General Information

The Reading Road Show Program at the Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Service (IIHHS) at James Madison University (JMU) is accepting applications for a full-time Early Literacy Program Specialist. The Reading Road Show is a literacy program that serves the areas of Harrisonburg, Rockingham and Page County through two mobile literacy vehicles. These vehicles visit neighborhoods, childcare centers, family childcare providers and schools to provide story time, activities and book checkout for children for all ages. The Gus Bus also serves the community as contact point information on resources available to families.

Duties and Responsibilities

To support JMU’s and IIHHS’ mission and vision to provide outreach programs to the community and provide quality experiential learning opportunities to JMU students.

The successful candidate is responsible for assisting with planning and implementing literacy enrichment after-school programming at Spotswood and Stone Spring Elementary Schools and implementing the neighborhood program in Harrisonburg.

Duties include: distribution of book bags and food bags, maintenance of attendance records, data collection and assisting with planning for appropriate activities for the neighborhood stops and after-school programming as part of a 21st Century Community Learning Center.


Must be able to work evenings (Monday through Friday 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.) and occasional weekends; have knowledge of child development and best practices in early childhood education; demonstrated ability to work with children; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with children, youth, adults, agency professionals, school staff and community members; excel at multi-tasking and taking initiative in an independent work environment and general computer skills required with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Access, Excel and Publisher.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred. Ability to speak Spanish a plus. Experience in a non-traditional classroom a plus.
