General Information

James Madison University invites applications for the position of Director of the Department of Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The review of applications will begin on January 17, 2018.

Duties and Responsibilities

The director is the academic unit head for the department. Responsibilities of the director will include guiding all aspects of the Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies (IdLS) and Independent Scholars majors including enrollment management, course and program development, curriculum revision, advising, resource enhancement, program assessment, and faculty and staff performance evaluations. The director reports to the Vice Provost of University Programs.

The major in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies provides students in the pre-professional education programs (Inclusive Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Middle Education, and Special Education) extended breadth and integration across the content areas of Language Arts and Communication, History/Social Sciences, Mathematics, and the Natural Sciences. The director will facilitate and coordinate collaboration among program faculty, affiliated unit heads, and JMU’s College of Education. The director chairs the IdLS Steering Committee and works closely with other entities to direct and coordinate the IdLS major.

The Independent Scholars major provides students with a learning environment in which they develop and pursue self-designed curricular pathways and research goals. Admission to the IS major is by application only. The IdLS director supervises and supports the work of the coordinators of the IS major.

The director of the IdLS department will serve as an administrative leader in the university community, working collaboratively with colleagues in different colleges. The director leads the unit´s programs while also providing service to the university, the field, and the community. The director will also maintain teaching effectiveness and continue scholarly pursuits.


Preferred areas of candidate expertise include a demonstrated commitment to and experience working with K-12 education in one or more of the IdLS content areas – as well as past administrative experiences that have helped prepare the applicant to serve as an academic unit head. At the time of application, individuals should hold rank as an Associate or Full Professor in one of the disciplines associated with Language Arts and Communication, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, or History and Social Science.
